What is a copyright?

Copyright is a form of protection grounded in the U.S. Constitution and granted by law for original works of authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression. Copyright covers both published and unpublished works. Cross-Cultural Communications, LLC holds copyright on all text, tables, and images in Culture & Language Press publications unless otherwise noted.

If I am the author or contributor of a CLP publication, do I need to request permission to re-use my own material in future publications?

Authors and contributors must submit a permission request each time they plan on re-using their material, unless otherwise noted in an author’s or contributor’s publishing agreement with CCC.

Can an author or contributor of a CLP publication post his/her material on a website?

No, authors and contributors may not post their material or the page proofs on a website, unless otherwise noted in the author’s or contributor’s publishing agreement.

Permissions

When do I need to request permission to use a CLP publication?

You must request permission whenever you want to use any of CCC/CLP’s materials, whether for commercial or educational purposes.

Do I need to contact the author/contributor or Cross-Cultural Communications, LLC for permission?

Permission to use material published in a CLP publication can only be granted directly from Cross-Cultural Communications, LLC.

Can I post a link on my website that links directly to an excerpt of a CLP publication?

You may not post an excerpt or entire CLP publication on your website; when you post any part of a CLP publication online, you are violating our rights of copyright.

You may post a link directly to the homepage or other pages of any websites owned by Cross-Cultural Communications, LLC.

Is there a percentage of copyrighted work I can use in a classroom discussion or a podium presentation without having to request formal permission?

No.

How do I submit a permission request to use CLP material?

Permission requests may be submitted in the following ways:

Visit www.copyright.com and enter the title of the publication you are requesting permission for in the “Get Permissions” search box.

Online Request Form
Submit your permissions request to Cross-Cultural Communications, LLC, via our online form. We will respond to your request explaining the conditions of use for the requested material and outlining potential payment information. You are required to accept these terms and return our correspondence with the potential payment. If no payment is required, you must still accept the terms and acknowledge our correspondence. If payment is required, you will be asked to acknowledge the terms and return correspondence with payment, which can be made via credit card or check. Please keep a copy of the form for your records. Checks must be drawn on a United States bank in United States dollars. Make checks payable to Cross-Cultural Communications, LLC, 10015 Old Columbia Road, Suite B-215, Columbia, MD, 21046, USA. Payment is non-refundable. Please keep a copy of the terms for your records.

How long does it take to receive permission?

You will receive an immediate response through the Copyright Clearance Center Republication Service. For the online form at the CCC website, a permission request containing detailed information will be processed in approximately 5-7 business days.

If I have received permission once to use material, do I need to request permission again for subsequent times?

Yes, all permission requests are for one-time use only. With each additional use, you must contact Cross-Cultural Communications, LLC.
