Webinar

Interpreting in Mental Health

Live session: May 6, 2026 11:30 am
- 12:30 pm
Presenter: Zeyad Al Juboori, MD, CHI

Interpreters working in mental health settings often find themselves navigating far more than language. They may encounter client resistance, limited insight, cultural misunderstandings, stigma, or crisis-driven behaviors—all while trying to maintain accuracy, neutrality, and flow. These moments can feel like barriers, but they can also offer valuable clues about what a client is experiencing. Participants will learn practical strategies to identify what an obstacle might be “saying” about a client’s needs, fears, or values, and how to use that information to strengthen the therapeutic alliance rather than derail it. Through case examples and reflective prompts, attendees will practice reframing obstacles as clinical data, improving their ability to adjust interventions in real time. By the end of the webinar, participants will be better equipped to interpret obstacles not as failures or dead ends, but as meaningful entry points for deeper understanding, collaboration, and progress in mental health care encounters.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe foundational mental health terminology and core concepts relevant to interpreting in behavioral and psychiatric settings.
  • Analyze common linguistic, cultural, and ethical challenges encountered during mental health interpreting encounters.
  • Demonstrate the application of four evidence-informed strategies to manage challenges, mitigate barriers, and support accurate communication in mental health settings.

Certificates for CEUs will be issued only to those viewing the live webinar. Certificate download instructions will be emailed to attendees 24-48 hours after the webinar has taken place.
