When interpreting, context matters. We understand our role as interpreters, and we know what it’s like to be a patient, but we don’t always understand the context of the medical encounter from the clinician’s perspective. This workshop is designed to give you a behind-the-scenes look at how medical encounters are conducted. We will explore the structure and content of a typical medical encounter, including why health professionals ask the questions they ask and how they use that information, in real time, to arrive at a diagnosis. By understanding the “why” and “how” clinicians function when conducting a patient interview, participants will be better prepared for the nuances and context that influence communication, diagnoses, and ultimately, patient outcomes.
