There are a number of challenges when working with people on the autism spectrum. This presentation will focus on working with children and their families. Katherine Langan will share an overview of the autism spectrum, information about bilingualism and autism, and describe some of the challenges, taking into account the National Standards of Practice for Healthcare Interpreters. She'll also introduce the importance of metalinguistic awareness in this context. After this presentation, participants will: - Have a basic understanding of the autism spectrum, - Be aware of the possibilities and debate on the effects of bilingualism for autistics, - Recognize the challenges of interpreting, especially in evaluation and therapy situations.
