Language Access Under Pressure: Immigration, Federal Policy, and Professional Practice

Live session: October 14, 2026 11:30 am
- 12:30 pm
Presenter: Jaime Fatás-Cabeza, MMA, USCCI

Human mobility is a defining global phenomenon, driven in large part by migration. As people move across borders, the need for language and cross-cultural services expands throughout public institutions. In the United States, sustained immigration has helped shape an increasingly multilingual, multiracial, and multiethnic society. Speakers of languages other than English now interact regularly with healthcare systems, schools, courts, government agencies, and social - service providers nationwide. Because meaningful participation in these institutions depends on effective communication, language access has increasingly been recognized within human-rights and civil-rights frameworks and as a fundamental requirement of equitable public service. Recent federal policy shifts, however, have weakened important elements of the administrative framework supporting these commitments.
