Interpreting in Mental Health

Interpreters working in mental health settings often find themselves navigating far more than language. They may encounter client resistance, limited insight, cultural misunderstandings, stigma, or crisis-driven behaviors—all while trying to maintain accuracy, neutrality, and flow. These moments can feel like barriers, but they can also offer valuable clues about what a client is experiencing. Participants will learn practical strategies to identify what an obstacle might be “saying” about a client’s needs, fears, or values, and how to use that information to strengthen the therapeutic alliance rather than derail it. Through case examples and reflective prompts, attendees will practice reframing obstacles as clinical data, improving their ability to adjust interventions in real time. By the end of the webinar, participants will be better equipped to interpret obstacles not as failures or dead ends, but as meaningful entry points for deeper understanding, collaboration, and progress in mental health care encounters.
